Welcome to the Expandable Technology Forum

What is the ETF?

A forum to raise awareness, share knowledge and experience of applying expandable tubulars in upstream oil applications. This is achieved through regular technical workshops and the members area of this website.

The ETF covers both solid expandable tubulars and expanding sand screens. It is not a commercial forum; the presentations will be technical papers, not marketing presentations.

The objectives of the Expandable Technology Forum (ETF) are:

To increase awareness of expandable tubular technology throughout the industry
To stimulate learning, technology transfer and knowledge sharing by discussion of case studies
To develop the market for expandable tubular products through discussion of products / applications
To agree industry common definitions and terminology

What are expandable tubulars?

Expandable technology is a system for increasing the diameter of the casing, liner or sand screens of an oil well by up to 20% after they have been run down-hole. This expansion is done through a cold working of the steel by a larger expansion tool.
This expansion reduces the telescoping effect that traditional casing plans have (large diameter at the top and small at the bottom). The advantage of this expansion is that a larger diameter well bore is possible at total well depth versus a standard casing string. This has benefits in deep drilling because wells can reach greater depths without a loss in final well bore diameter.
